Back to school is here and the odds are that your favorite playground might suddenly have a bunch of big kids. No shade, you just may want to try out something new if you have a toddler.

I went through our main city's recreation sites and pulled together every parent & tot / adult & tot drop-in I could find across Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, Coquitlam, North Vancouver, and Langley, along with what it costs, where to park, how to get there without a car, and whether there's a playground close enough to stretch the outing into a whole morning.

A few notes before you dive in:

  • I looked all of these up myself and cross-checked them against each city's official site

  • Drop-ins get busy, especially the free ones, so call the centre ahead of time to confirm the schedule hasn't changed before you load up the stroller

  • Fall sessions generally run into December, with some pausing for holidays. Always double check specific cancelled dates with the centre

  • Prices and schedules change without notice. Treat this as your starting point, not gospel

  • Every single community centre I’ve ever been to has a #certifiedchangingtable🚼 , I can’t go to all of them but don’t be shy about asking,if you don’t see one immediately! Staff are usually incredibly kind and civic minded.

Vancouver

Mount Pleasant Community Centre

#1 Kingsway, 604-257-3080

Parent & Tot Gym, ages 0-6

- When: Tue, Thu, Fri & Sat, 10am-12pm, Sept 8 to Jan 2

- Fee: $3/child or $5/family

- Parking: Metered street parking only, no dedicated lot

- Transit: About a 10-12 minute walk from Broadway-City Hall Station (Canada Line), or bus along Kingsway/Broadway

- 🛝 Playground tip: You don't even need to leave. The park is attached right to the community centre, with a playground, skate park, wading pool, basketball court, and community garden all steps from the door.

Kitsilano Community Centre

- Fee: Drop-in fee applies, check kitscc.com for the current rate

- Parking: Free onsite lot

- Transit: No nearby SkyTrain, bus routes along Broadway or 4th Ave get you close

- 🛝 Playground tip: Connaught Park is right next door and it's fully fenced, with separate structures for older and younger kids and a spray park (open May-Sept) with cannon streams and flower showers. The fencing is the real win here if you've got a runner.

West End Community Centre (downtown)

Baby Playtime, ages 0-5

- When: Mon 12:30-2pm, Tue 9:30-11:30am, Wed 12:30-2pm, Thu 9:30-11:30am, Fri 12:30-2pm; Jumbo Playtime Sat 9:30-11am

- Fee: $3.50/drop-in

- Parking: No dedicated lot, metered street parking in the West End

- Transit: Walkable from Waterfront Station via bus, or the 5/6 routes toward Stanley Park

- 🛝 Playground tip: Nelson Park is about a 5 minute walk away with a play structure and big grassy lawns. If you want to go bigger, Stanley Park's playgrounds are also just a few blocks north.

Coal Harbour Community Centre (downtown)

Baby Jellyfish Playtime, pre-school ages

- When: Mon to Fri, 12:30-2pm

- Fee: $3.50/drop-in

- Parking: Paid underground parking

- Transit: Short walk from Waterfront Station (Canada Line, Expo Line, SeaBus)

- 🛝 Playground tip: There's a playground right on site at the centre, plus you're a short stroll from the Coal Harbour seawall if you want a walk after.

Douglas Park Community Centre

Parent and Tot Gym, ages 0-5

- When: Mon 9-11am (Sept 14-Dec 14), Wed 9-11am (Sept 9-Dec 16); no class Sep 30, Oct 7, 12, Nov 11 and 18

- Fee: $5/drop-in, space permitting. Heads up, the centre's own site notes this program caps at 30 registered spots and once it's full, no drop-ins are allowed, so call first

- Parking: Limited onsite parking

- Transit: Bus access along Cambie or Oak St, no nearby SkyTrain

- 🛝 Playground tip: This is the one to know about. Douglas Park's playground is widely considered one of the best in Vancouver, a $760,000 wooden structure with suspension bridges, multiple slides, climbing walls, swings, a sandy play area, a trampoline, and a tiny log house. Budget extra time, nobody wants to leave.

Surrey

Surrey calls this program "Stay and Play, Parent Participation." It runs in gymnasiums, not dedicated playrooms, and needs a free Recreation Passcard (get one at the front desk with photo ID) before you can drop in. Most centres have free onsite parking. Chuck Bailey and Bridgeview are the only two within walking distance of a SkyTrain station (Gateway, Expo Line), everywhere else in Surrey is bus or car for now.

Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre (Whalley/City Centre)

Fleetwood Community Centre (Fleetwood)

I wasn't able to confirm which of these Surrey centres has a playground right outside the door the way some Richmond and Vancouver ones do, so double check that piece locally if it's the deciding factor for your outing. Sessions run September 8 to December 18, 2026, and are closed on statutory holidays.

Richmond

All Richmond community centres have free onsite parking lots. City Centre CC is the closest to the Canada Line, about a 10 minute walk from Richmond-Brighouse Station. The rest are best reached by bus.

Cambie Community Centre

- 🛝 Playground tip: The centre sits right next to King George Community Park, which has a playground, a waterplay area with geysers and spray toys (open late May to Labour Day), and a covered picnic shelter.

City Centre Community Centre

- 🛝 Playground tip: You're right by Minoru Park, one of Richmond's biggest, with a playground plus trails, a lake, and lots of open grass to burn off extra energy afterward.

Hamilton Community Centre

South Arm Community Centre

- 🛝 Playground tip: South Arm Park is right there, a recently rebuilt playground plus an outdoor pool with waterslides (summer only), tennis and pickleball courts, and miles of walking paths.

Steveston Community Centre

Sing and Play Adult & Child (Richmond Family Place, up to age 6)

- When: Fri, 1-2:30pm

- Fee: Free

- 🛝 Playground tip: This is the showstopper. Steveston Community Park's playground just finished a full remodel, fishing-village themed with a giant trawler play structure, a lighthouse tower with two big slides, a large sand play area with diggers, a train, and a double zip line. There's also a seasonal waterplay area right beside it.

Thompson Community Centre

Art and Play Adult & Tot

- When: Tue & Thu, 9:45-11am

- Fee: $4.05/drop-in

- 🛝 Playground tip: Terra Nova Adventure Park is a short drive/walk away in the same Thompson area, a nature-style playground built from ropes and cedar wood along the Fraser River dykes. Worth the trip if you have the extra time.

Burnaby

Most Burnaby centres offer free onsite parking. Edmonds CC is a short walk from Edmonds Station (Expo Line). Bonsor is close to the Metrotown SkyTrain stations. Cameron sits across from Lougheed Town Centre Mall, near Lougheed Town Centre Station. Willingdon only has two designated onsite stalls, so plan on street parking nearby.

Christine Sinclair Community Centre

- 🛝 Playground tip: This one is more of a sports hub (it's across from Bill Copeland Sports Centre and the Burnaby Lake fields), I couldn't confirm a dedicated playground on site, so this is more of a "gym first" stop.

Bonaire Recreation Complex

Edmonds Community Centre

- 🛝 Playground tip: Edmonds Park wraps around the centre with tennis and basketball courts, an outdoor plaza, and a walking circuit. Confirm playground equipment specifically with the centre before you go, but there's plenty of outdoor space either way.

Willingdon Community Centre

All Burnaby drop-ins require adult participation and a paid adult admission ($1.90 + tax, or a Be Active Pass), and none run on statutory holidays.

Coquitlam

Pinetree CC and Town Centre Park CC are both close to Lafarge Lake-Douglas SkyTrain Station (Evergreen Extension) and Coquitlam Centre mall, with free onsite parking.

Pinetree Community Centre & Town Centre Park Community Centre

- Fee: Check with each centre, drop-in fees are typically in the $2-4 range for Coquitlam Early Years programs

- 🛝 Playground tip: Town Centre Park (right beside both centres, next to Lafarge Lake) has a playground with a tall slide and lots of swings, plus a spray park. It's not the newest equipment in the region, but it's functional, shaded, and there's ice cream nearby if you need a bribe.

North Vancouver

There's no SkyTrain in North Van. You can get there via SeaBus from downtown Vancouver's Waterfront Station plus a connecting bus, or by bus directly over the Lions Gate or Ironworkers Memorial bridges. All NVRC centres have free onsite parking.

NVRC Parent Participation Playtime, ages 0-5

- Delbrook CRC, 851 W Queens Rd: Sun, 8:30-10:30am

- John Braithwaite CC, 145 W 1st St: Fri, 9:30-11:30am

- Lynn Creek CRC, 1491 Hunter St: Sat, 8:30-10:30am

- 🛝 Playground tip: I wasn't able to confirm specific playground details for each of these four sites without more digging. All are in residential North Van neighbourhoods with nearby parks, but check with the specific centre or Google Maps before you commit to a picnic.

NVRC also runs Parent Participation Playtime at Parkgate, Lynn Valley, and Mickey McDougall. Call (604) 987-7529 to confirm days and times for those locations.

Langley

There's no SkyTrain in Langley yet. The Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension is under construction but isn't expected to open until late 2029, so it's bus or car for now. Free onsite parking is available at all three centres below.

Tot Romp, parent participation, ages roughly 9mo-7yrs

Offered at Aldergrove Community & Utility Complex (ACUCC), Walnut Grove Community Centre, and W.C. Blair Community Centre.

A Few General Tips

- Bring exact change or a debit card, some front desks don't take cash for small drop-in fees

- Arrive 5-10 minutes early. Popular sessions do fill up, especially the free ones

- Most drop-ins require an adult to actively supervise and participate, this isn't a childminding service

- Call ahead before statutory holidays. Programs are frequently cancelled or shifted around Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day, and the winter break
